My Lost and Found Life pg 248-312

Summary
So the ending was really, really , really good. But at the same time I expected something a more shocking. The end was basically they found her mothers body. She is already dead and they believe the cause of her death was getting distracted while driving and end up driving off the road. The good thing about this ending is it not the typical ending where the mother was found safe and sound and they lived happily ever after. So the ending was not predictable basically. Another good thing about the ending is Ashely drove past the place several times where her mother was found dead. And what makes it good is the fact that sometimes when you are trying to figure out something you don't even have to go to far away places or even do a scavenger hunt in another town. Its like the ending is saying you don't have to go far sometimes the answer is right near you or in fact in front of your face. There will be times when you won't recognize it until it's brought to your attention. But with this situation it really hurts to be driving past your dead mother and not know that she was there the whole time.

Quote
"But I can't hate her for it. Whatever she did , she always loved me. I am still, and always , her daughter." (Bowsher 312)

Reaction
The reason I picked this quote is it is really powerful. The daughter is saying no matter what my mother did all that is important is I know she loves me and I love her. Therefore i will always be her daughter. And with this quote you can see how much Ashely has changed throughout the book. She started off with I hate my mother why would she do this to me to I love her no matter what. I know she tried her best to make me happy and I realize that's why I love her. Another thing you can recognize with this quote is how stubborn Ashely is. Readers will make the assumption that Ashely is the time of person where something bad has to happen in order for her to realze how lucky she was. For example the saying when you loose everything then you will realze how grateful you were therefore be grateful of what you have now.

My Lost and Found Life pg 187-248

summary
So in between these pages nothing really important happens except some things. Like Ashely is going on dates and getting closer to a one of her workers, Patrick. Even though she was told not to get too attached to him because he tends to break girls hearts. What really happens is he will like a girl and she will like him back then next thing you know Patrick ends up leaving to a different place, state, etc. But Ashely still went out on dates with him and when it's time for him to leave the shocking thing is she gets a little down but ends up getting over it. What else happened was Ashely accidentally saw one of her friends from school at a store. That conversation was really, really, really awkward. And of course Ashely regrets it. Last but not least the strange thing about working at the coffee house is there is a strange man that will come in the store shout out some things and leave. And he will always have headphones in his ears. And one time the owner Malcolm went up to the guy and Malcolm was wondering what the guy was listening to. And the man just freaked out and hit Malcolm on the head. Basically knocked him out. When I read this first of all I thought this guy has problems and  that Malcolm should not go near him in fact no one should. And the biggest thing that happened in the  book was Earl got hurt. Earl is a friend of Ashely that works at the gas station late at night and since Ashely lives in the camper she sometimes goes to Earl and talk to him. But what happened was Earl was at the gas station and someone came in told Earl to give him all the money they had and knocked him out really bad. But the strange thing is the the person who robbed the place went to the camper where Ashely sleeps. But Ashely did not answer the door and the robber had difficulty opening the door and left. But the strange thing is it seemed that the robber knew someone was in the camper. But anyways Ashely found Earl bleeding on the floor that's when she called 911.
Quote
" I'll talk to him. After all you saved my life. Teddy said I might have bled to death if you hadn't found me. These scalp wounds bleed something fierce." (Bowsher 206)
Reaction
So this is the part where Ashely visits Earl at his house. And they are discussing about how Teddy might tell Ashely that she can not live in the camper anymore because it was too dangerous. And Ashely does not know where else to do she can't get an apartment because she is not making enough money. But the reason I picked this quote is because Ashely is lucky for having him as a  friend like Earl. He is going to try and talk to Teddy to persuade him to let Ashely still live in the camper. And Earl also covered up Ashely when he told them what happened when he got hurt because. If the police found out that they are hiding Emily in the camper they are in some serious trouble. But Earl said she came to visit an old friend. Even though Ashely saved Earl's life Earl did some favors for her too so know they are even.

My Lost and Found Life by Melodie Bowsher

Summary
Obviously finding a job will be hard. It's hard for all most everyone. Ashely complained that the two weeks of finding a job was terrible. Well I have news for you Ashely you won't get a job by the time your done snapping your fingers once. You have to work hard to get the job, you need to qualify by having some experience or skill. And Ashely just because you shop at a show and apply for a job does not mean there is a 100% your going to get the job. Ashely ends up living in  camper behind her mom's ex boyfriend's gas station. She wakes up early in the morning goes to the gym to take a shower then heads to work. She does this everyday because well she doesn't have a shower in her camper.Ashely ends up  gets a job at a coffee house the place is called Mad Malcolm's Cyber  Cafe.

Quote
"Tell me, Officer. Am I public enemy number one around here? Do you  have nothing else to do expect wait for me to screw up?" (Bowsher 129)

Reaction
This quote explains how I feel sometimes. Like I have the feeling like people only look at me when I screw up doing something but when I am doing something good they almost never look at me. So I know how Ashely felt at the moment. Plus this is the moment where the officer gives her a warning that she can get in trouble about her car. But it is just a tough time for her right now especially since she is working everyday so she can have some money in her pocket. So she is just going through a rough time and the fact of when people go up to her and talk to her it ends up being bad news so i think this is what makes her think she is a public enemy to everyone.

My Lost and Found Life pg.62-124

Summary
You can tell that Ashely is either acting strange because she is on drugs or she is desperate for her mother and she is just doing anything, good or bad. In the book she then talks about the fight she had with her mother the day her mother disappeared. And basically it's really the mother telling Ashely she did a big mistake and that both of their lives are going to change. Ashely being her usual self told her mom to hurry up and stop talking because she was tire and wanted to go to bed. Next thing you know they are outside yelling at each other and Ashely goes off to bed after a few minutes not caring that her mother is crying. I believe that all of this is Ashely's fault if Ashely listened to her mom before she disappeared then maybe her mother would not disappear in the first place. Because they would both come up with a solution to the problem. Ashely keeps saying that this is all her mothers fault and how unfair her mother is. But think about it her mother gave her everything she wanted and let her do what ever she wanted to do. If Ashely just cared a little more about her mother there is a possibility that the problem of her mother disappearing could of have been prevented. Now this is a chance for Ashely to put herself in her mothers shoes and see how it is to deal with a big house and keeping up with the bills. Plus another twist that happened is there is a possibility that the bank is gonna take the house away if she does not start paying things. So now Ashely has to find a place to live and get a job. Cause Ashely has no money besides a few bucks on her. Although I have to give Ashely some props for meeting up with one of her mothers workers to talk business. Although something is fishy about him. Last but not least Ashely decides to sell some things so she can have money in case something happens. Which is a good idea.
Quote
"When everyone finally went home,Stella and I were alone in the half-empty house. That was when it all sunk in. With everyone gone, I could not keep busy anymore and pretend that everything was normal. I felt Disoriented as I walked through the rooms, remembering happier times." (Bowsher 96)

Reaction
Again in this quote above you can see the feelings she is feeling which is basically depression. Even though I feel bad for her at the same time I think she deserves it. Plus life is not fair. Everything can not go they way we want it to go. Remembering the good times as Ashely was looking at the empty house remeinds me of when I had to move from house to house when I was younger. I would walk around the inside of the house and memories would reply in my head.

My Lost and FoundLlife By Melodie Bowsher pg. 1-62

Summary
Ashely's mom leaving off like that is definitely a hard thing for Ashely to take in. It's like the minute  your about to end with doing the baby stuff in school and focusing on your future something bad happens that completely throws you off. And your left with nothing besides a house that has all your stuff. you only have  money that is on you at the moment.  Ashely is going to college and five days before she graduates from high school her mother disappears and supposedly people are claiming that she embezzled one million dollars from her company. Ashely has no siblings, her father died when she was fourteen. By looking at the situation Ashely is left alone with a big house  and her cat Stella. Plus her class is having a senior class trip to Hawaii which she ends up not going to because she has no money at all. Ashely ends up hanging out with the wrong crow. For example while Nicole Ashely's best friend is at the trip one of Ashely's other classmate  Tattie ends up hanging out with Ashely very often. Tattie does drugs, is very wild and likes to go to different clubs nigh time. Taitte's mother somewhat acts like Tattie but Tattie does not get along with her mother. Because of Tattie Ashely ends up doing drugs for the first time but end up meeting some strange people. That usually Ashely will not even seem to pay attention to. Ashely is the type of girl that is popular. She is prom queen, and is known to get everything he wants, Ashely's dresses in expensive clothes and she also does whatever she wants. So it will be interesting to see how she handles things and how difficult it will be for a type of girl that gets everything?

quote
" I grabbed her satiny blue bathrobe and slipped it on over my clothes. It was as close to having her arms around me as I could get. Tears , the same tears I had been fighting to hold back for days , began to trickle down my cheeks and then turned into a flood. my heart hurt so much I did not think I could bear it." ( Bowsher 45)

Reaction
This is an example of what makes me want to read more. All the descriptions for example how the tears feel down her face. Another thing I like about this quote is I honestly don't think the author should  of wrote the last sentence in the quote above. I say this because you can already see that Ashely is having a tuff time with her mother gone and how desperate she wants her  mother back. We can already see the frustration that Ashely is going through. Plus when Ashely put on her mother's bathrobe i knew exactly that she really does miss her mother and she is not the type of person that would think in this situation I need my mother back because I need a new sweater for the dance lets say. Because the day before her mother disappeared they had  a fight and Ashely is giving her mother the silent treatment and its hard to have your mother missing after you got in a fight. It's like leaving off on a bad foot.

Manchild in the Promised Land Pg 204-239

Summary
There was a part in the book where he is talking about Jim's funereal and Claude said that all the cats selling drugs were there and the junkies. Then he said something which is the shocking to me. He said I want all these people to be at my funeral like his. Why would you say that? That is sad actually it just shows you were in the drug life and you did not have any real friends. It is just a sad thing to say. Never mind i change my mind I said before that I actually think he is changing but I take that back. He is still always getting distracted with the bad things he use to do before and he gets distracted with getting respect from other people. He is thinking about which is a better way to get respect doing this or that. When you see people who always gets drawn back to what they were doing before you then know that that person has not moved on in life, enough said. Once again Cluade is hanging around with the wrong type of people its like he is trying to fit in with the crowd and school life also. But all I have to say is it is either one way or the other make your decision.

Quote
"Sonny, you got to stay away from them gray boys and them gray teachers, because, they stealin' your soul man." (Brown 223)

Reaction
Those are type of people that want to bring you down in life as well as they are doing down themselves it's like they don't want to go done a lone. So they decide to bring people with them. Or this quote shows that this person do not want to see you get in a higher place then them. So they give you the wrong advice. It is said that a friend is doing this to another friend but there are different type of people in this world good and bad. There is people will like and will not like. There are even people that will use you which also happened in this book.

Manchild in the Promised Land Pg 176-204

Summary
So I am happy that this term is over because I can start a new book this book was to repetitious. I started to get bored with it. Although I did not finish the book just reading the chapters i read it just kept on talking about how he kept on stealing things and getting a beat from his mother. At times I just wanted him to get hit really hard in the head and that will make the light bulb and realize that if you keep on stealing and playing hookey then you are not going to get anywhere in life. Even though there was several parts in the book where he started to actually go to night school end up wanting to be something in life. He still did stupid things like get high once in a while.  I remember one part of the book where he notices that one of his sisters is acting completely opposite from how she was before. He was blaming his mom with not being on top of her. But at the same time I think that it is his fault because when he was younger he would be the one who would do all the bad things. And his sisters and brothers are probably saying why did you didn't stop Claude from doing it when he was younger? So it was like he was a bad role model for his little siblings.

Quote
"Fathers were picking up guns and saying "Now, look, if you fuck wit the rent money, I am gonna kill you. " and they meant it." (Brown 181)

Reaction
When I read this quote I said to myself if a kid steals money especially money for the bills then the kid needs serious help. Having your father threaten you is basically saying why were you even planing to go there because that is the wrong move. This is a kid stealing money to by drugs. What you can also tell from this quote is that this kid is addicted to drugs. Another thing you can tell is dialect in the quote "wit" its slang for with.

Manchild in tyhe Promise Land 161-

Summary
So I don't really believe in the phrase everyone deserves a second chance. Only in some certain situations although its like Claude is getting a second chance in life. One of his friend is asking Claude to not go kill the person that almost ruined his  reputation. In fact one of Claude's friend asked I will do it for you I will kill him because i have nothing in life, I have nowhere to turn, I lost everything but you have your parents and you have things in life. The next paragraph i read about is Claude wanting to stop selling pot. To me this was a big shock because i remember from the previous chapters Claude said he was not going to stop selling pot because that is how he got money whenever he needed it. Then another shock happens when Claude decides to go back to school. He wants to learn things and when he fails some classes he is not like the typical type of person that would get mad and give up. He actually took the classes over again and passed. He was talking about how some of his friends decided they were going to start school as well but most of them did not last long, except one. Tony wanted to stick with Claude and try to get somewhere in life and Claude is on a good path.

Quote
"Since I had gotten out of Warwick, I had left the garment center, gotten a job at Hamburger Heaven, and started school. I'd done a whole lot of things. But I was still looking for something new." (Brown 177)

Reaction
When I read this quote I  like standing up and clapping. He is actually y pushing himself. He wants to find that special something. Which i am actually interested in knowing also. But this is coming from a kid that use to not care about going to jail, skipping school, stealing all the time. It is like someone hit him on the head and a light bulb went on. He realized that the things he was going before is not the way life is suppose to be, And honestly I am happy for him. His friends should be looking up at him just like Tony is. Also Claude needs to realize how lucky he is because some people do not have to opportunity to go back to school and give it a shot. Now i just want to see whats that special something and how long he is gonna last in school.

Manchild in the Promised Land pages 88-161

Summary
So once again Claude is put into juvenile. Ever time he does something bad once he gets out he again put in juvenile but at a higher level for example not with people who is his age. Because the court room people thinks that if he keeps on doing bad things and he is in juvenile lets make it tough for him teach him a lesson by putting with older people. Claude I notice does not things get to him. Every time they put him with older people he always finds a way to make friends get what he wants even do things that he will still do if he was out on the street. Like picking on people so they get scared of Claude. Next thing you know people have respect for him. I also do notice that even though Claude acts tough he is not at certain times. For example went he went to Warwick which is like jail he told his mother people are waiting for me to beat me up. But at certain jails people know him. He has a reputation over at certain places. I know for a fact that Claude does not want to go to school and be like almost everyone else who go to school and get a job. Claude wants to just drop out of school. He even has friends who will help him make a living. First Claude sells drugs that how he gets money but also by tricking people into doing something. Claude gets paid and the buyer ends up getting tricked. Claude even prefers going to jail over staying home at times.

Quote
" I wanted to know things, and i wanted to do things. It made me start thinking about what night happen if i go out of Warwick and didn't go back to Harlem. But I could not really see myself going back to Harlem. but i could not really see myself going anywhere....."

Reaction
This quote to me sounds like Claude is crying for help. When a kid says they do not see themselves going anywhere that is a cry for help in my ears. Claude does not even see himself finish school and getting a job. He is just thinking about making a living on his own. You know what that also shows that he does not have people to turn to. If you don't have people to turn to then you feel like a failure you, don't have anyone to talk to. Claude is smart he reads books and wants to know things, learn things but he cares about his reputation and he has no one to push him to move on in life. If you do not have no one to push you in life then you go no where in life unless you are mature enough to push yourself.

Manchild in the Promised Land Pages 9-88

Summary
This book's setting is taken place in  Harlem, New York.In the year between the 1940-1950. This book is basically about a boy who keeps on doing bad things with his friends. He always get into fights, sometimes he goes to school, sometimes he does not even come home he sleeps at parks. He already has a group of friends that do the same  type of things with him. They are constantly stealing playing a game called "Hookey "which is basically when they just skip school. The main character has two sisters and a little brother named Pimp. Although he does not care that he is setting a bad example for his bother and sister. His group of friends teach  things they do not know  to each other like for example if a place is crowded they will still try to steal by either blending in or distracting the cash register person the other friend goes behind the counter and take the money. He gets beating from his father with the belt but that does not seem to work when they parent is trying to give him a lesson. He does all these bad things over and over again. He makes friends by having a fight with them like a physical fight a few times next thing you know they are close buddies. This boy has even gone to juvenile.

Quote
"Seem like nobody can't make him understand. I talk to him, I yell at him, I whip his ass, but it don't do no good. His daddy preach to him, yell at him, he beat him so bad sometimes, I gotta run in the kitchen and git a big knife on him to stop him from killin' that boy. You think that might break him outta those devilish way she got? Child, that scamp'll look Jesus dead in the eyes when he is standin' on a mountain of Bibles and swear to God in heaven he ain't gon do it no more. The next day, or even the next minute, that little lyin' Negro done gone and did it again- and got a mouthful a lies when he git caught." [page 39 Claude Brown]

Reaction
so I love this book from the first page automatically I was like this was going to be an action book. It started of with the main character getting shot and his friend is asking him are you going to tell the police I was with you. At that moment I was like his friend got to be kidding. Your friend is bleeding and shot lying on the floor and your asking him if he is going to tell the police I was with you. You are not going to ask if he is okay? But I feel bad for the main characters family you can tell from the quote above which is his mother talking that she does not know what on earth she is going to do with him. I do recognize the mother has a dialect. One thing that I think is the problem with this family is there is no trust or communication. The main character hates his dad he even says in the story I am going to kill him one day. Like who says that you are suppose to respect your parents yes  it is alright to be mad at them at times but kill them that is going a little too far. But the mother is too soft on her son at times. Like there was one part where someone had to go pick him up from the police station and he knew automatically it was going to be his mother. Because she always comes to his rescue. I believe that if you actually sit down with your parents and have a talk with them once in a while then they start trusting you they will understand where you are coming coming from in certain situations and you will understand where they are coming from. The only bad thing I do not like about this book is that they talk about the same thins sometimes like they will always talk about stealing and cutting school. And after a while from reading that kind of stuff you tend to get bored after a while. Although i am interested on if he will change.
